Born into poverty in Panama, Cirilo McSween's journey is one of defiance, resilience, and triumph over systemic barriers. Against the backdrop of Jim Crow America, McSween confronts entrenched racism while pursuing the elusive American Dream. From his arrival in the United States as an ambitious immigrant to his ascent as a trailblazing entrepreneur and civil rights activist, McSweens life becomes a testament to the power of determination and community.
Through his tireless advocacy for equality and opportunity, McSween plays pivotal roles in shaping both Panama's identity and Chicago's civil rights landscape. A confidant of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a groundbreaking insurance executive, and a philanthropist dedicated to empowering underserved communities, McSweens story bridges nations and generations.
The Most Beautiful Deaths in the World (Documentary Feature, USA, Art, Experimental, Language: English, Spanish w/ English subtitles, 80 min. 2024) Directed by: Quique Aviles, Ellie Walton
Las Muertes Más Bellas del Mundo/The Most Beautiful Deaths in the World tells the story of five artists whose families fled El Salvadors civil war in the 1980s, landed in the nations capital, and created art out of war. The film follows a poets journey to find answers and healing through his writing of Las Muertes and interweaves the portraits of Salvadoran-Wachintonian artists, including a dancer, photographer, and musicians. Their voices and archival images tell a compelling, intimate, and historically-grounded story of a community resolving trauma and finding identity, salvation, and joy. |
